Being such a patriotic (see our motto: “Don’t Mess with Texas”) and burger-loving people, we see celebrating July 4th in Houston as a natural extension of our current behavior. Most likely you’ll already be out grilling on Independence Day, but we’ve rounded up some other great ways to get in some family time, watch the fireworks and let freedom ring. Houston’s official July 4th celebration hosted by Mayor Annise Parker is an all day festival capped off with a performance by Pat Green. Admission is free if you bring a canned good or $8 otherwise but keep in mind that the party draws a huge crowd--arrive early for a good view of the fireworks.

In keeping with tradition, the Houston Symphony will have their annual performance of the 1812 Overture--complete with booming cannons—and The Texas Tenors will join in singing patriotic tunes. Admission is free but tickets must be obtained at the box office the day of the event for covered seating.

It being the first Sunday of the month, the MFAH will not only be open on July 4th but admission is free thanks to Target Free First Sundays. Crafts and performances will occur between 1pm-5pm and a screening of the film “1776” starts at 2:30pm.
