Woodforest Golf Club

This golf club is a bit of a hike from downtown--about 30 minutes--but the course is worth the ride. It’s in great shape considering the dry summer, and you don’t have to worry about lotteries or signing up in advance, like at other local courses. Just get there before the crowds: Woodforest was just recognized by the Texas Golf Edition of the Dallas Morning News as the best golf course in Texas.

Calling all beer lovers--the Brewmasters International Beer Festival comes to Moody Gardens Sept. 2 through 5. The festival was so successful last year during its inaugural launch that its Brewhaha Grand Tasting sold out within an hour of opening. If you don’t mind the lines, you can choose from more than 400 craft beers over the course of festival. More difficult than choosing which to taste will be figuring out the designated driver.

Revival Market
Read Reviews550 Heights Blvd, Houston, TX 77007 (map)
This relatively new Heights grocery, butcher and charcuterie has been drawing raves for its locally sourced meats and artisanal sides. So if you’re looking to throw a feast that’s more than Heinz on a store-bought hot dog, you can pick up all the essentials. Or, if it’s too hot to cook, enjoy the market’s menu, highlights of which include the Revival Dog, a smoked Mangalitsa hot dog with green tomato relish and chicharrón, smoked lamb sandwich, and, our favorite, the H-Town Mafia--cured coppa, salami and finocchiona with green tomato relish and pickled peppers on a hoagie.

The countdown to college football season ends on Labor Day weekend. And in Houston, that can only mean one thing--the annual game between Texas Southern University and Prairie View A&M. This year’s game, on Sept. 5 at Reliant Stadium, marks the 26th annual game between the rival schools, who’ll look to one-up each other not just with touchdowns, but also the half-time shows, featuring two of the best marching bands in the country.

Labor Day weekend falls on the first Saturday of the month, and that means you can expect the First Saturdays Arts Market, held in the parking lot of Wind Water Gallery, to be going strong. Listen to live music by Robin Kirby while you peruse the offerings from the photographers, painters, knitters and jewelers who'll set up shop from 11am to 6pm.
